EnergySolutions and Exelon Corporation signed an agreement to accelerate the decommissioning and environmental restoration of the Zion Nuclear Power Station site located in Zion, Illinois on Lake Michigan just north of Chicago. Approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the licensed transfer from Exelon to ZionSolutions took place on September 1st, 2010.

ZionSolutions now has possession of the facility and has started the decommissioning of the Zion Station. ZionSolutions is a wholly owned subsidiary of EnergySolutions created for the sole purpose of this decommissioning project.

The decommissioning of the Zion Station will be accelerated by decades under this agreement. The decommissioning will be performed using state-of-the-art technology and rigorous environmental controls to protect human health and the environment and to preserve the lakefront and wetlands properties.
